Mohali property tax: the 10% rebate has closed

Hindustan Times reported on 2 October 2026 that Mohali’s 10 percent property-tax rebate ended on 30 September. The municipal corporation’s assistant commissioner, Jagjit Singh, said anyone who missed that date can still pay until 31 December without the rebate. From January the penalty is 10 percent. After March it is 20 percent, plus 18 percent interest.
The same article gives two pictures of how many bills are still open, and they are not the same sum. The opening line says about 9,000 of nearly 42,000 taxable properties are unpaid, about 21 percent, while nearly 33,000, or 78 percent, have paid. It says the corporation collected about ₹40 crore from 1 April to 30 September this financial year. Later it says the city has 60,987 property units, 16,264 exempt and 44,723 taxable. Exempt, on that line, means a single-storey house up to 5 marla, a flat under 500 square feet, and eligible defence property.
- Residential: 34,451 taxable, 19,184 paid, 15,267 still unpaid.
- Commercial: 6,203 taxable, 3,139 paid, 3,064 pending.
- Industrial, institutional, government and stadium: 2,331 taxable, 761 paid, 1,570 pending.
- Mixed: 1,738 taxable, 184 paid, 1,554 unpaid.
The residential unpaid line alone, 15,267, is already larger than the 9,000 in the first paragraph. Hindustan Times printed both. Do not add the category lines and expect 9,000. Do not treat either figure as a sale price.
What the article does say about the city getting more expensive to tax: collection rose from about ₹24 crore in 2021–22 to ₹57 crore in 2025–26, and Singh tied part of that to new malls, showrooms and other commercial property. On 30 September the office put eight staff on the counter because of the rush. None of that is a rate per square foot for a flat, a plot or an SCO.
The decision, if you already own in Mohali: the rebate is gone. Pay by 31 December if you want to avoid the penalty. If you are still choosing a purchase, this note does not change the asking card. It is the bill that starts after the sale.
